Music for St John – St John in the Wall, Bristol

Churches have inspired music for millennia.  When most people think of ‘church music’, they might think of organs, hymns and bellringing, they probably wouldn’t think of a 25-minute long recording of ‘textural sound…creating a world that is at once both brutal and fragile’.

The piece of music entitled ‘Music for the Church of St John the Baptist’, written by Jebanasam on the Subtext Recordings label, was inspired by and researched through a number of trips to the CCT church in central Bristol.  The church stands out because of the archway allowing a trackway right through the bottom segment of the spired tower.  The crypt of the church is open to the public daily, and is often used on evenings and weekends by local and touring bands as a popular, central performance and recording space.

‘Music for the Church of St John the Baptist’ includes a diverse assemblage of instruments from the baroque viol to guitar amplifiers to custom convolution and granular programs.
