In 1943, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann was asked by the Government to establish a Spinal Injuries Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The Unit was intended to treat soldiers and civilians injured during World War II. As part of his treatment for the injured veterans, Guttmann promoted different methods of rehabilitation, including sport.

The 15 May started with a hint of spring promise when 15 pupils from Doubletrees School arrived at Goss Moor. The key stage two children were keen to get out on site following a twenty minute bus trip and a rather long wait to use our sole on-site portaloo.
